Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Monday 06.02.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Wet natural avalanches possible. The avalanche danger stays at the same level as long as the rain continues. Avoid avalanche release and run out areas.
  • The danger is greatest from Monday morning

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near surface

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 5. February 2023

Mountain weather

Sunday 5. February 2023

6 mm precipitation, up to 14 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l Sunday night. Gale from south, changing to strong breeze from the west during the afternoon. -4 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 6. February 2023

20 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong gale from the southwest during renoon. -1 °C to 5 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Store skred (str. 3) kan ikke utelukkes i noen få heng.
